Miami, FL – DanceAfrica, Miami 2018, presented by Delou Africa’s 9th annual African Diaspora Dance & Drum Festival of Florida. This unique festival showcases dance, music, fashion, intercultural workshops and performances. We are South Florida’s #1 cultural arts destination festival. We are a proud Knight Foundation Arts Challenge recipient. They supported Delou Africa’s efforts to increase our annual festival audience and establish the festival as “DanceAfrica Miami”, one of the many cities on the nationwide African festival network.
The festival expands cultural engagement through a variety of program components for the entire family. Participants enjoy African, contemporary and Caribbean dance, drum and music workshops, yoga, the BetterHealth and wellness Fair and symposium presented by Jackson Health and Dr. Christ-Ann Magloire M.D., beach events, an artisan marketplace, and a free Children’s Village featuring movements, rhythms, arts & crafts, African folktale, and a back to school book bag give-away. This year’s festival theme is Masqueradology,” the journey of the mask” depicted through folklore, dance, drum, music, steelpan and stilt dancing that focuses on masquerade traditions of the Africa Diaspora.
Master teachers include Marie Basse-Wiles (Senegal Dance), Youssoouf Koumbasa (Guinea Dance), Dijian Tie (Ivory Coast Dance), Marisol Blanco (Afro-Cuban Dance), Nancy St. Léger (Haitian Dance), Fode Bangoura (Guinea Drum), Aboubacar Sylla (Guinea Drum), Anita Macbeth (Yoga), Shelia Alexander (U.S.A. Shekere), Ashlee Thomas (U.S.A. Twerk Out Work Out) Ibhahima Dioubate (Balafon), Mamadouba Camara (Guinea Drum), Samba Guisse and Mamadou Guisse (Senegal Drum), Mangue Sylla (Guinea Drum), Aboubacar Soumah (Guinea Drum),
DanceAfrica Miami Concert Extravaganza, hosted by Mohamed DaCosta, professor of West African Folklore Dance and Music from the University of Florida. The concert will feature fashions by “All Over Africa” and performances by Next Generation Dance Academy and Edwin Holland Dance Ensemble, Delou Africa Dance Ensemble, Sikan Afro-Cuban Dance Project, Nancy St. Leger Danse Ensemble, African Watoto (Children’s) Dance Theatre, and the West African Drum & Dance Collective. These talented, national and local renowned artists will perform on DanceAfrica, Miami’s main concert stage which is historically sold out.
A special invitation is extended to the Press, Media, and the community on the opening night of DanceAfrica Miami, Friday, August 3rd from 5p.m. – 7p.m. to meet the guest artist, master teachers, and performers.
DanceAfrica Miami presented by Delou Africa’s 9th annual African Diaspora Dance & Drum Festival of Florida is open to the public Friday August 3rd through Sunday August 5th. Tickets for single drum and dance workshops are $15 – $25. Tickets for the DanceAfrica Miami Concert Extravaganza are $25 – $35.
